Chris Devine and Michael Nix, present: “Bach and Banjo”. Bach’s music takes on new perspectives when filtered through their imaginative arrangements and instrumental combinations. Nix’s New Classic Banjo Project compositions for seven-string Banjar and duo arrangements of classic late 19th century music for five-string banjo are known for virtuosic, high energy performances of music that morphs and blends genres from classical, jazz, folk, bluegrass and international music in quirky, captivating arrangements. These two innovative multi-instrumentalists Chris Devine’s violin, viola, and mandolin, and Michael Nix’s classical guitar, and seven-string Banjar. High-energy music from Brazil, Italy, Ireland, and original pieces for voila and seven-string Banjar compliment the Bach. Devine and Nix bring together decades of international concert touring, recording, and composing in many genres. They are founding members of world chamber music trio The Pioneer Consort. Chris Devine is a musician of diverse talents, performing on electric and acoustic violin, mandolin, and guitar, as well as flute, saxophone, and keyboard. He studied with internationally known concert violinist Julian Olevsky. As a session musician he has appeared on over 100 CDs in many different styles of music, including classical, jazz, pop, country, and folk. Chris toured Europe and Russia as a featured soloist with Blackmore's Night, starring the influential guitarist Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple. Michael Nix has performed traditional classical repertoire, new classical, and original music on guitar, lute, banjo and mandolin, in concert halls throughout the United States and Asia. Recently Nix presented his compositions based on the historical archives at the Smithsonian. He has composed solo music, songs, chamber music, symphonic works, electronic music, and opera. Nix designed the seven-string Banjar, combining elements of the classical five string banjo, the lute and the classical guitar. He founded the New Classic Banjo Project, commissioning new works to expand the repertoire of the modern classic banjo. https://www.hawksandreed.com/events/category/live-music/

Banjo innovator Michael Nix designed the Banjar; a modern seven string banjo combining elements of the five-string banjo and classical guitar; bringing the classic finger-style banjo of the late 1800's into the twenty first century.

The New Classic Banjo Project was instituted by Nix to develop and record a modern classical banjo repertoire. Compositions will be commissioned on an ongoing basis for 7-string Banjar, the traditional nylon strung five-string classical banjo, the six-string guitar banjo and other banjo hybrids. Nix will record and perform the new repertoire in festivals, conferences, and concerts.

A first round of premier New Classic Banjo Project concerts were performed on March 7 and 8, 2020, with commissioned works by composers Jim Dalton of Boston, Thomas Schuttenhelm of Philadelphia, and Nix’s own compositions for 5 and 7-string banjos. A second season of new commissions and compositions are planned for 2021 featuring composers from Great Britain and the U.S.

A series of four articles on the New Classic Banjo Project and Nix’s vision for the New Classic Banjo compositional style for both 5 and 7-string banjo, was commissioned by the British BMG (Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar) Federation Newsletter for the 2020 quarterly publications.

Michael Nix performs on classical guitar, banjo, and mandolin throughout the United States and Asia, he has recorded for the PBS series “American Experience”, independent documentaries, and numerous CD projects. His compositions are performed internationally. His music has been heard on “Weekend Edition”, and other NPR programs. He participated in Seegerfest 2014, commemorating the life of banjo player Pete Seeger. In 2017 Nix spoke about and performed his New Classic Banjo Project compositions on a banjo panel at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
